According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), major depressive disorder affects roughly 17.1 million adults in the United States–yet only about 1 in 3 people actively receive treatment.
As a mental health organization, we know unhealthy perceptions surrounding depression and the general lack of mental health awareness are two major reasons why individuals do not seek help. If you regularly struggle with painful emotions but aren’t sure whether or not you need treatment, here is a quick resource to help you find the resolution you need.
Although depression can affect people in different ways, there are common symptoms people with depression often share. If you struggle with one or more of the following on a regular basis, you may want to consider seeing a therapist to discuss your symptoms.
Lack of happiness – Depression can often take the joy out of a person’s life, even if they are doing something they used to enjoy, such as going on vacation, spending time with family, or working on a hobby.
Anxiety – Although depression and anxiety are two different mental health issues, high levels of anxiety can often be associated with depression.
Feelings of loneliness – Feelings of loneliness or detachment–especially around family and loved ones–can be a major sign of depression.
Difficulty with work and motivation – Depression can often hinder one’s ability to stay motivated, even with the most basic tasks.
Sleep Irregularities – Although sleep irregularities can be caused by factors other than depression, persistent sleeplessness or excessive sleep can be a symptom of depression.
Low self-esteem – Low self-esteem is a common symptom of depression that can cause significant pain and hardship. Low self-esteem can make forming close connections difficult.
Suicidal thoughts – Thoughts of suicide or dangerous behavior, even without a real intent to carry out those acts, can be a very serious sign of mental illness that should be treated immediately. If you find yourself with suicidal thoughts, we strongly urge you to seek help right away.
If you currently have depression or suspect you might, please know there are an abundance of community resources that can help and support you overcome this obstacle in your life.
